On the evening of 9 November 1989, East Germany announced that citizens could cross the border freely. Crowds gathered at checkpoints and guards stood aside. Berliners began dismantling the wall with picks and hammers.
The wall had divided the city since 1961. Its fall symbolised the end of the Cold War and accelerated the reunification of Germany, which was completed on 3 October 1990.
